Well, I don’t know whose toes to kiss in the NGWN stratosphere, but one of the letters I got assigned for the A to Z blog challenge is H–and i can think of no better subject than one of our FAVORITE subjects–HEROES!
Getting to create awesome alpha heroes is probably one of my best-loved jobs about writing romance. Let’s face it–who doesn’t look forward to searching for a hot physical model then fashioning him into a hot, muscled, protective man with a sex drive the size of the Atlantic?
But beneath all that, I enjoy the EXTRA steps that turn this guy into something more: the extra quirks and nuances, usually gleaned from his background or upbringing, that turn him into a man worth loving for the heroine–and hopefully, my readers.
The release next week of GOING WILD, a special box set of my first three WILD Boys of Special Forces books, seemed a great time to revisit how I did this with the heroes of those books. I hope that reading these little quirks will make you eager to visit longer with them in the books!
–Radio callsign: Hawk.
–Physical model: Nick Carter (grown up!)
–Is originally an Iowa farm boy, giving him old-fashioned ideas about love and marriage.
–Loves to read, especially the classics.
–Cannot dance at all. Pretty clumsy on the dance floor!
–Is handy around the house. Likes to be Mr. Fixit–though his idea of a really good day is laying around in his underwear and watching super hero movies.
–Loves his wife in a schoolgirl costume.
–An adrenalin junkie. Likes doing the dangerous “physical shit” of his job in Special Forces, like skydiving, repelling, and tromping through jungles.
–Loves fruit-flavored candies. Skittles is his favorite.
–Radio Callsign: Psycho Zsycho (or just “Zsycho”)
–Physical inspiration: Manu Bennett
–Was orphaned at the age of 10 and lived on the streets of Seattle. Has a working “street knowledge” and earthiness because of it.
–Works hard…and plays twice as hard.
–Loves going to the ballet. it represents a lot of beautiful things he never had in his life.
–Massive Star Wars fan. Thinks Han Solo could kick Indiana Jones’s ass any day of the week.
–His pierced frenulum has made a lot of submissives happy!
–Radio callsign: Runway.
–Physical inspiration: Ian Somerhalder
–Was raised in the lap of luxury, in Central California’s most wealthy neighborhood. Has joined Special Forces because he feels the need to give back. His parents aren’t that happy about the decision!
–Has a tattoo down his right leg, with the Chinese symbols for “gratitude”. He almost lost the leg during a mission, and never wants to forget that fact.
–Knows four languages, and is studying a fifth.
–Loves mental challenges and puzzle games. The mental aspect of BDSM fascinates him. (Anyone in for a good mind fuck?)
As you can tell, I could go on all day about these boys! They continue to live in my heart and soul, and I’m so happy that I’m still creating new WILD Boys books, so I can bring them back into the stories for cameo appearances as the stories continue. Hot Heroes are definitely one of the best perks about writing romance!
