Summer’s hot and the kitchen’s hotter, so the Nice Girls are looking for great recipes to cool us (and YOU!) down this summer. Our contest runs from AUGUST 4TH – 17TH. We’re posting daily featured recipes on the blog from each of our Nice Girls, but we want you to participate.


Post your own cool-down recipes in the comment section of the featured post. The recipe can be for a drink, an appetizer, an entrée, or a yummy dessert. Each recipe you post enters you to win our GRAND PRIZE OF A $50 AMAZON GIFT CARD at the end of our contest. More recipes = more entries.


At the end of our contest, FOUR lucky readers will be chosen by the Nice Girls for second place prizes, one in each food category. So make your recipes delightful, readers, because we get to vote on the ones we like best. The recipe in each category with the most votes wins an AMAZON GIFT CARD prize!

Now for today’s Featured Recipe: Sweet & Savory Pickles  from Nice Girl Harlowe Wilde

sweet and savory pickles (1)Ingredients

  • 1 jar of dill pickles
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 12-15 splashes of hot sauce (Tabasco works great!)


  1. Remove pickles from the jar and drain juice.
  2. Blend pickles with sugar in a bowl.
  3. Add hot sauce and blend
  4. Return pickles to the jar.
  5. Every day for a minimum of one week, flip the jar. (You can shake it a little, too, if you want.) This guarantees the flavor infuses every slice.

  1. easy dessert for hot days
    melt 2 hershey bars in microwave then quickly add 1 tub cool whip. Spoon into graham cracker pie crust and refrigerate for about an hour. For a fancy look I add kisses to the end of the pie crust

  2. My sister & niece love pickles! I will have to tell them about this. =)

    Now here is a salad I like =)

    Grilled Chicken & Berry Salad

    1/2 head Romaine lettuce, washed and chopped into bite-sized pieces
    6-8 oz. baby spinach
    12-16 oz. chicken, marinated, grilled, and sliced*
    8 oz. strawberries, sliced
    8 oz. blueberries
    4 oz. crumbled Feta or shredded fresh Parmesan cheese
    1 c. sliced almonds, toasted
    Berry Poppy Seed Dressing to taste

    For serving a large crowd, toss all the salad ingredients in a large serving bowl and add dressing to taste. For individual servings, arrange ingredients on plates and serve the dressing on the side. Makes about 8 side dish servings and 4 main dish servings.
